Forgot ist zu den dienstältesten Black Metal Gruppen Russlands zu zählen. Mit Burning down wurde nun das 2001er Demo auf CD neu aufgelegt.
Mit Again beginnt die CD zunächst ruhig und beschaulich. Eine sanfte Gitarrenmelodie und atmosphärische Hintergrundelemente stimmen harmonisch, um dann, nach etwas weniger als zwei Minuten, von einem eingängig hämmernden Takt abgelöst zu werden. Die sanfte Gitarrenmelodie ist nun einer schnelleren und schrägeren Spielweise gewichen, doch – und das ist das überraschende – die Musik wird nicht brachial. Die Gitarren erweisen sich in angenehmer Art und Weise als melodisch, sind dabei jedoch nicht zu spielerisch und der einfache Rhythmus ist zwar antreibend, aber nicht hart oder schnell. All will disappear folgt einer ähnlichen Strukturierung. Das eingängig gespielte und zuweilen sehr mechanisch klingende Schlagzeug (Drumcomputer?) gibt den flotten und antreibenden Rhythmus vor, der hier jedoch schneller und abwechslungsreicher gestaltet ist. Daneben steht die melodische Gitarrenlinie, die gute und eindringliche Melodien beherbergt, aber zu keinem Zeitpunkt zu spielerisch oder melodisch wirkt. Ein weiteres auffälliges Merkmal von Forgot ist der Gesang, der zwar, logischer Weise verzerrt, aber recht leise ist und mehr aus dem Hintergrund kommt. Das Titellied Burning down ist von Beginn an ein schnelles, eingängiges und raues Stück, in dem es vereinzelt rhythmische und melodische Variationen gibt.
Nach dem ziemlich rohen Burning down geht es mit dem Lied Forgot sehr harmonisch und beinahe schon lieblich weiter. Das langsame Schlagzeug hat nun einen natürlichen und druckvollen Klang, die ruhigen Gitarrenmelodien erzeugen eine sphärische Atmosphäre, da die einzelnen Töne zum Teil lang gezogen werden. Nach dreieinhalb Minuten wird diese Idylle von einem schnellen, grimmigen und dezidiert eingängigen Part abgelöst. Forgot bleibt bis zum Ende in diesem Gewand, doch gibt es während dieser hämmernden Strecken feine Melodien im Hintergrund zu hören.
My star ist ein Instrumental, welches nur aus dem dumpf und schnell hämmernden Schlagzeug und einer Abfolge der immer selben Riffs besteht. Abwechslungsreicher geht es da schon mit Misanthropy weiter, einem flott gespielten Stück mit einer wunderbaren Melodieführung im Mittelteil. Hier fällt auch wieder der bessere Klang auf, der dem, vom Lied Forgot sehr ähnlich ist. Das Schlagzeug besitzt einen druckvolleren Klang und der Gesang ist etwas lauter und zentraler im Geschehen. Davon kann beim folgenden Nuclear winds jedoch nicht die Rede sein. Der Klang ist dumpf und matt, das mechanische Schlagzeug pocht rigoros seinen Takt und die sehr schnell gespielten und rau klingenden Gitarren geben dem Ganzen etwas sehr brutales und heftiges.
Das abschließende Lied The standard kommt dann wieder im klanglichen Gewand der ersten drei Stücke daher. Atmosphärisch ist The standard recht düster ausgefallen. Dies liegt vor allem an der dunkel klingenden Gitarrenarbeit und den leisen harmonischen Effekten, die dezent aus dem Hintergrund zu hören sind.
Burning down ist eine gelungene rohe Black Metal Veröffentlichung, in die man sich jedoch reinhören muss. Zum Einen liegt das am Schlagzeug, das etwas gewöhnungsbedürftig ist und auch an der unterschiedlichen Klangqualität der einzelnen Lieder. Wenn man dies hinter sich hat, offenbart sich einem guter und eigenständiger Black Metal, der mit einigen sehr guten melodischen Arrangements aufwarten kann, wobei zu sagen ist, dass Burning down kein melodischer Black Metal ist! Der Klang und die Spielweise sind sehr wohl als rau zu benennen, doch fügt Forgot dieser Rohheit geschickt melodische Elemente hinzu.
Forgot is to count as one of the senior Black Metal bands of Russia. With Burning Down the 2001 demo is now re-released on CD.
With the track Again the CD firstly starts calm and contemplative. A softly guitar melody and atmospheric background elements are toned harmonically, in order to be taken off after less than two minutes by a catching hammering beat. The softly guitar melody has yielded to a faster and creep playing, but - surprisingly - the music doesn't become brute. The guitars turn out to be melodic in a gently way, but not being to playful, yet, and though the simple rhythm certainly is driving, it isn't hard or fast. All Will Disappear follows a similar structuring. The catching played and now and then very mechanic sounding drumming (drum computer?) owes the lively and driving rhythm, which here is created faster and more varied, yet. Besides is the melodic guitar line, which takes in well and emphatic melodies, but at no time acts too playful or melodic. Another noticeable characteristic of Forgot are those vocals, which obviously are distorted but quite silent and more coming from the background. The title song Burning Down is from the beginning a fast, easy to grasp and raw track, occasionally having rhythmic and melodic variations.
After the rather rough Burning Down it continues with the song Forgot very harmonic and almost even lovely. The slow drumming has now a natural and pressureful sound, the tranquil guitar melodies engender a spherical atmosphere, because of single tones being stretched long. After three and a half minute this idyll is replaced harshly by a fast, grim and decided catching part. Forgot contains this guise to the end, but while those hammering passage delicate melodies are heard in the background.
My Star is an instrumental, which only exists of the dull and fast hammering drumming and a sequence of the incessantly riffing. More diversified it continues on Misanthropy, a quickly played track with a magnificent melody leading while the centrepiece. Here the quite better sound astonishes, which is rather very similar as the song Forgot. The drums have a pressureful sound and the vocals are slightly louder and more present. Thereof the following Nuclear Winds isn't the point. The sound is dull and week, the mechanic drumming rigidly stamps its beat and the very fast played and raw sounding guitars create something extremely brute and fierce. The finally song The Standard comes along in the same soundly guise than the first three songs. Atmospherically The Standard is turned out right sombre. This lies at the dark sounding guitars and the calm harmonic elements. That is discreetly heard in the background.
Burning Down is a succeeded Raw Black Metal release, but you have to listen in. For the first there's the drumming, which is rather getting used to and also the several differing sound quality of the single songs. Passed that all, it unveils a good and independent Black Metal, which can come up with some very good melodic arrangements, whereby it's necessary to mention, that Burning Down is NO Melodic Black metal. Sound and playing are definitely raw, but Forgot adds these rawness melodic elements dexterously.
